Charity & Chow

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Most grocery shoppers consider prepared foods as a time-and-money-saver option on busy nights. Now they can add a charity component to their quick dishes through Hiller’s Markets’ Good Deeds in the Making.

The program, which launches today among all seven Hiller’s grocery stores, features two new dishes in the prepared foods counter every two weeks. The dishes are favorites of local individuals – and profits from the sale of these dishes go to a designated charity chosen by each person.

“There are many ways to leverage community connections,” says Jim Hiller, CEO of Hiller’s Markets. “Friends support each other’s causes. I am grateful to these devoted individuals for helping us find yet another way to make a difference.”

The following schedule indicates the individuals, dishes and their causes. All sales of these dishes will send money to their respective charities.

Sept. 8-21:
Jill Syme’s stuffed cabbage and Lila Lazarus’ quinoa with roasted vegetables
Cause: Kids Kicking Cancer

Sept. 22-Oct. 5:
Rabbi Paul Yedwab’s petite quiche with spinach, mushroom and Jarlesburg
and Gail Posner’s no fat black bean salad
Causes: Forgotten Harvest and Ministrelli Women's Heart Center

Oct. 6-Oct. 19:
Tony Fayne’s Buffalo chili and Samira Cholagh’s kibbie
Causes: the Agree Foundation at Temple Israel and the Chaldean Foundation’s Adopt A Refugee Family Program

Oct. 20-Nov. 2: Lisa Diggs’ corn and smoked whitefish fritters and Danialle Karmanos’ tuna pasta
Causes: Gleaners Food Bank and DKWIO

Nov. 3-Nov. 16:
Janice Cherkasky’s diabetic apricot salad and Jeff Loeb’s pasta
Causes: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Hiller ALS Center at WSU

“I am fond of the Albert Einstein quote, ‘the value of a man resides in what he gives.’ A strong man, a good man, is one who uses his power and reach to help others,” says Jim Hiller.

Founded in 1941, Hiller’s Markets is dedicated to local businesses and causes. Hiller’s indicates Michigan products with special shelf tags and partners with thousands of charities and organizations through cash register campaigns, Scrip partnerships and other supportive collaborations. The first Hiller’s Hot Dog Eating Contest this Saturday (Sept. 12 at the Commerce Township store) kicks off another effort to promote and support Michigan charities. Good Deeds in the Making is the next step on this path.
