SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Most months, shoppers can donate a dollar at the cash register in the seven Hiller’s Markets grocery stores toward a local cause. In July and August, they’ll be able to support the local chapter of Celebrities Against Autism, which offers practical support and guidance to Michigan families.

“Albert Einstein said that ‘the value of a man resides in what he gives.’ A strong man, a good man, is one who uses his power and reach to help others,” says Jim Hiller, CEO of Hiller’s Markets, Southeast Michigan’s oldest local grocery chain.

“Every 20 minutes, another family receives the life-changing diagnosis that their child is autistic,” says Val McFarland, president and founder of Celebrities Against Autism in Michigan. “CAA was founded by two Michigan moms who have loved ones affected by this devastating neurological disorder. Our mission is to promote autism awareness and generate much-needed revenue to assist as many families as possible.”

McFarland claims Michigan is one of the states many insurance policies do not cover for autism treatment. “Together Hiller’s Markets, Celebrities Against Autism and you can make a difference! One out of 94 boys is affected by autism.”

Founded in 1941, Hiller’s Markets operates seven stores in Southeast Michigan. Dedicated to promoting local companies and cottage industries, Hiller’s indicates Michigan products with special shelf tags in every aisle and highlights Michigan companies in its biweekly circular. This partnership with Celebrities Against Autism is another step in the ongoing effort to give Michigan a boost.

Hiller’s is dedicated to joining with community organizations – through its active Scrip card program, in support of events and by hosting specialty food fairs serving niche markets like gluten-free consumers. The company also has a long history of working with non-profits, including ALS of Michigan, Jewish National Fund and Gleaners Food Bank.

“I am dedicated to working with good people and good organizations close to home,” says Hiller, whose groceries are located in Ann Arbor, Berkley, West Bloomfield, Northville, Plymouth, Commerce Township and Union Lake.

Celebrities Against Autism is a Michigan spin-off of the national effort launched by celebrities Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey. Its goal is to raise money to help families obtain the treatments and protocols they need to help autistic individuals function at the highest level possible. Autism, which affects 1 in 150 children, is a complex neurological disorder that impact development of social and communication skills. Therapies are expensive and often not covered by insurance; this group helps families afford necessary and life-changing treatments.

Puzzle Pieces can be purchased at any Hiller’s checkout for $1 during the months of July and August. All monies go toward Celebrities Against Autism.
