SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – An estimated one in three American adults suffers from cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, stroke and coronary heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends a healthy diet and active lifestyle as the best defenses against heart disease. With that in mind, Peter Julian, Hiller’s Markets Executive Chef, will prepare exclusive heart-healthy recipes in the center court of Orchard Mall as part of a free speaker series initiated by Beaumont Hospital. The event will take place February 11 at 12:30 p.m. The second in a monthly program this event will feature original Hiller’s recipes as well as cooking tips for creating heart-healthy foods at home. There will also be a brief discussion on creating a healthy diet by Beaumont nutritionist Stacy Goldberg. “It’s not hard to prepare good food that’s good for you too,” says Chef Peter Julian, who will make salmon patties from fresh salmon fillets as well as several side salads featuring heart-healthy vegetables and whole grains. Founded in 1941 with a commitment to quality, service and selection, Hiller’s operates seven stores in metro Detroit. Its top-quality fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and grain products are the best examples of affordable ingredients that are easy to find and incorporate into a diet that promotes optimum heart health. What’s more, Hiller’s sells dozens of entrees, side dishes, desserts and salads in its prepared foods case, many of which are low fat, low-cholesterol and high in fiber. “Hiller’s has always been a company with a conscience,” says Jim Hiller, CEO of Hiller’s Markets. “I will never sell fish from murky farms in China or produce grown in valleys where cattle run-off creates the very real risk of bacterial contamination. Every person in my company purchases grocery products with the kind of attention to detail that ensures that you receive only the highest quality foods in town.” Among its seven stores, which are located in Ann Arbor, Berkley, West Bloomfield, Commerce Township, Union Lake, Northville and Plymouth, Hiller’s offers a wide variety of foods for customers with nut, dairy and wheat allergies, as well as those who follow kosher and gluten-free diets. Its dedication to specialty palates includes impressive British and Japanese food sections. In a bold move toward promoting and supporting healthy lifestyles among its customers, Hiller’s recently stopped selling cigarettes. Tobacco-related illness is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States, and tens of thousands of adults die each year from heart diseases caused by secondhand smoke, according to the American Lung Association.
