Hiller’s Markets Hosts Gluten-Free Food Fairs

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - One in 133 Americans endures Celiac Disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the intestine attacks itself in response to allergens like wheat, rye and barley, and cannot tolerate gluten. If they eat products that contain offending ingredients, they suffer stomach pains, skin outbreaks, bone loss or awful headaches.

The locally owned company is a national leader in gluten-free grocery products. Hiller’s will host two days of gluten-free food fairs December 13-14 in Commerce Township (39950 W. 14 Mile at Haggerty Road). The two-day event will feature experts from Tri-County Celiac Support Group, gluten-free product demos and tastings, great gluten-free holiday recipes and Hiller’s quarterly Gluten-Free Newsletter. Shoppers will also have the opportunity to win a $100 gluten-free shopping spree.

“People just don’t understand how serious it can be,” says Miriam Cohen, a Bloomfield Hills resident and Celiac sufferer. “I’ve always shopped at Hiller’s, so I was thrilled to see so many foods I could eat without getting sick.”

Thousands of people attended Hiller’s gluten-free food fairs at the Ann Arbor and Union Lake stores in October. Hiller’s makes it easy for gluten-free shoppers to find a wide array of things to eat - special shelf tags identify gluten-free products, Hiller’s Chef Peter Julian offers gluten-free holiday recipes, which he demonstrated recently in cooking classes at St.Joseph Mercy Hospital and on a FOX 2 morning show segment . Hiller’s Community Outreach Director, Lynn Lederman, spoke about Hiller’s variety of delicious gluten-free items on WJR News/Talk 760’s Come to the Table with Steve Stewart.

Founded in 1941 with a commitment to quality, service and selection, Hiller’s operates seven stores in metro Detroit.
