SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Building and maintaining good health should include at least a cup of freshly-brewed tea daily. Tea contains antioxidants called polyphenols, which may reduce heart attacks, protect against certain cancers, reduce arthritis inflammation and improve bone mineral density. Come to Hiller’s Markets for Tea Tastings, February 7-8, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Ann Arbor and 14 Mile/Haggerty stores! These events will feature two local loose tea companies – Ono Tea and Community Tea House – demonstrating how to steep loose tea and offering samples. There will also be demos by Hiller’s British foods buyer Lynette Kidd and Hiller’s Japanese foods buyer Kyoko Watanabe about the respective tea traditions in their home nations. Among its specialties, Hiller’s sells an extensive array of Japanese and British foods. “The kettle is on most of the time in England for tea,” says Hiller’s British Foods Buyer Lynette Kidd. “It is definitely a social thing, and it always has been Britain’s choice of beverage.” Kidd will serve Earl Grey and Black teas at the upcoming event along with scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam and biscuits (known Stateside as cookies) as well as other British delights sold at Hiller’s. Joining Kidd and Watanabe will be Alice Gambee of Community Tea House of Commerce and Phuong Le of ONO Tea of Novi. Both represent family-owned Michigan businesses whose loose teas and steepers are sold at Hiller’s. “I love being able to do a tea sampling at Hiller’s because it gives me an opportunity to spend time with customers and talk to people about tea,” says Alice Gambee. “We called our company Community Tea House because it’s about coming together for a cup of tea.” “Hiller’s and ONO Tea share the same values of promoting and improving healthy food choices by offering products of the highest quality,” says ONO’s Le. Founded in 1941 with a commitment to quality, service and selection, Hiller’s operates seven stores in metro Detroit. In addition to top-quality affordable fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and pantry items, Hiller’s has an impressive selection of fine teas from companies around the corner and around the globe. Among its seven stores, which are located in Ann Arbor, Berkley, West Bloomfield, Commerce Township, Union Lake, Northville and Plymouth, Hiller’s offers a wide variety of foods for specialty customer populations including those with nut, dairy and wheat allergies, as well as people who follow kosher and gluten-free diets. “I drink at least a cup a day of my favorite tea,” says CEO Jim Hiller, who prefers Brassica green tea made from broccoli, which is of course sold at Hiller’s. “Tea has never quite caught on in America, but I wish it would. A cup of tea is soul-soothing and calming and in the midst of a busy workday, it’s the best way to keep your cool.” Tea Tasting at Hiller’s When: February 7 and 8, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Where: Hiller’s Commerce Township, 39950 W 14 Mile Rd (at Haggerty Road) and Hiller’s Ann Arbor, 3615 Washtenaw Avenue (at U.S. 23) |
