|
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Hiller’s Markets, a locally-owned community-focused grocery chain offering the best in service, quality and selection, is reaching out to local families to encourage healthy living. Michigan ranks in the bottom ten states for unhealthy weight, with obesity rates higher than 25 percent for adults and 12 percent for children ages 2-19. Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that less than half of Michigan middle school and high school cafeterias made fruits or vegetables available to students for purchase, yet 59 percent of cafeterias offered chocolate candy on a regular basis. “As the father of three grown boys, I know the temptation to buy easy, cheap food,” says CEO Jim Hiller. “But that doesn’t mean a parent has to give in to it. If I am to be an ethical and compassionate businessman, I must follow the imperative to partner with families to make it easy and affordable to feed their families good foods.” This fall, Hiller is excited to welcome families to his newest store at 3010 Union Lake Road (at Commerce Road) in Union Lake, for Family Appreciation Day on Saturday, November 8. Families will enjoy $1 hot dogs, 99-cent Sanders mini-sundaes and free cookies from Hiller’s bakery. There will also be a clown, magic show, balloon animals, face painting, tattoos and more. This year, Hiller’s has launched an outreach effort to schools, sending experts to PTA meetings to speak about nourishing school lunch options and healthy snacks kids will get excited about. School PTA groups near the seven Hiller’s stores – located in Commerce Township, Union Lake, West Bloomfield, Berkley, Ann Arbor, Plymouth and Northville -- will learn how healthy eating contributes to better school performance, and how whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables start kids on the path to lifelong healthy weight. Among the materials Hiller’s will share with PTAs are recipes for family-friendly meals and snacks plus tips for super-healthy bagged lunches – all without sacrificing great taste. Because children learn by doing, Hiller’s also welcomes school groups, Brownie troops and Boy Scouts to tour its stores, where kids learn about nutrition, grocery-shopping and healthful living. They also speak with company executives and chefs and taste great homemade healthy foods. “I love when kids come through my stores,” says Hiller. “We provide the nuts and bolts for living well – and I make it fun. I’m a kid at heart!” Hiller’s was founded in 1941 on a commitment to quality, service and selection. Each store offers sanitizing wipes for shopping carts at every entry door and children shopping with their parents can request a free cookie at the bakery. Local families trust Hiller’s to bring them the very best in fresh produce, meats, pantry items and specialty foods. Jim Hiller mandates that every food sold in his store be humanely produced – the fish counter never sells farmed fish from China and the meat is hand-selected by Hiller’s buyers every day. The national leader in gluten-free groceries, Hiller’s also stocks an increasing array of foods for customers with nut, dairy and wheat allergies as well as those who follow a kosher diet. With a dedication to specialty palates, Hiller’s features impressive specialty imports to cater to the needs of local expatriate communities. Download this article. |
