Feeding the Hungry

It’s easy to walk past without noticing the black-and-white Check Out Hunger coupons behind the register. It’s just as easy to tear one off and hand to the cashier to add to your grocery bill.

Even in tough times, an extra dollar may not cripple you - but it can contribute greatly toward feeding a hungry family.

Hiller’s makes it easy to support charities that make a difference. Check Out Hunger coupons send food to Gleaners Community Food Bank, and Hiller’s Scrip cards support the church, school or community group of your choice. And, because we partner with dedicated groups like ALS of Michigan, we make it easy for shoppers to help others.

We all know how troubled Michigan’s economy is. That makes poverty, hunger and homelessness ever more severe and donated dollars count even more.

All year long, you can pay $1, $3 or $5 toward feeding the hungry, since Hiller’s keeps a running tab on register giving for a grand, year-end gift.

Annually, our shoppers contribute in the range of $20,000 at the register – which buys more than a truckload of food, according to Larry Krispin, Hiller’s Buyer Supervisor.

In 2007, Hiller’s donated 200 cases of green beans, 300 cases of macaroni and cheese, 200 cases of bagged rice, 200 cases of beef stew, 100 cases of instant potatoes, 200 cases of canned ravioli, 100 cases of canned tuna and 200 cases of corn.

Since 1996, through year-round participation in the Check Out Hunger program, Hiller’s shoppers contributed $196,777 – providing 3.2 million meals through Gleaners.

“It all adds up,” says Larry, who’s worked for Hiller’s for 41 years. “A dollar here, a dollar there.”

Larry began with Hiller’s as a member of the night crew and worked his way through the ranks of assistant manager, manager, buyer and eventually became head buyer.

“When I started here, Hiller’s was an up-and-coming company,” he recalls. “I grew up with every family who shops our stores. I know a lot of the customers personally.”

It’s important to Larry to work for a company that gives back to its surrounding communities.

“We help all the schools and churches with our Scrip program,” he says. “We have a book this thick [he spreads his hands wide] of contributions. We bring in local manufacturers. We do what we can to boost local business.”

Hiller’s is a community-focused company, dedicated to invigorating the local economy alongside shoppers, employees and neighbors to make our home state thrive.

Every dollar counts. Do what you can. We certainly will.
