Exquisite Exclusive Flavors at Hiller’s

kiku_apple.jpgThis week a truly unique apple will appear in the produce section at many Hiller’s stores. The Kiku apple, discovered by Italian grower Luis Braun and now grown in Washington state, will only be available in Michigan at Hiller’s for as long as supplies last.

A natural mutation of the popular Fuji apple, the Kiku is exceptionally sweet, red as rubies, crunchy and juicy.





Take a vacation for your senses by sampling these exotic fruits available now for a limited time in the Hiller’s produce section.

Native to Peru, the pepino melon also grows in California and New Zealand. Teardrop in shape with smooth striped skin that is yellow or purple, pepinos are fragrant and taste like a combination of cantaloupe and honeydew.

Grown on the branches of tropical evergreens, mangosteen have a reddish-purple rind when ripe with tangy-sweet flesh reminiscent of the flavor of peaches. Mangosteen are part of the “superfruit” designation, offering antioxidants and abundant nutrients.

Mark Twain called it, “The most delicious fruit known to men.” Cherimoya are grown in the highland valleys of Ecuador and Peru, with white flesh and dark seeds. The name derives from the Quechua word, chirimuya, which means “cold seeds” because the plant grows at high altitudes. Cherimoya are tangy-sweet with a flavor that combines hints of pineapple, banana, pear, papaya and strawberry.

These popping-sweet grapes are used to make moscato wine. From the species Vitis vinifera, Muscat grapes have a sweet aroma and taste. Some believe it is the oldest domesticated grape variety.
